Episode 1

Daniel Marrack returns to the Cornish surfing town of Polnarren after a 20 year
absence, having bought a run down building which he is turning into a new surf
shop and café. His son, Brae, a super fit surfer in his late teens, is
determined to make the most of their new business venture. Dan’s 16-year-old
daughter, Abi, who initially decided she wanted to stay in London, has also
been drawn towards a new life by the sea. Having recently lost their mother,
Dan is determined that Brae and Abi should have a fresh start and a better life.
But the Marracks’ return does not go down well in Polnarren, as old rivalries are immediately re-ignited. Mark Penwarden, Dan’s ex business partner, is outraged that Dan has the audacity to come back to the town after having once had an affair with his wife Susan. Dan was also supposedly the cause of a boating accident which killed three fisherman 20 years ago. And in a town like Polnarren, bitter memories aren’t easily forgotten and It doesn’t take long before Dan is sharply reminded of events from the past. Susan still has feelings for him but she too has her own reasons for not wanting to be reminded of their affair. She urges Dan to leave Polnarren for good.
Walking into Polnarren, Abi is offered a lift from Mark and Susan Penwarden’s son Jimmy. Both are gorgeous enough to be confident flirts and there is an instant attraction between them. Later that evening, Abi turns heads at a beach party Jimmy has invited her to. Jimmy – used to getting any girl he sets his sights on - has completely fallen for the new girl in town. The feeling is clearly mutual but Jimmy must hold back because he’s made a pact with his best friend Charlie Morgan that the next girl to come to town is his. Much to his lovesick friend Narinder Gurai’s frustration, Charlie thinks Abi is irresistible and tries his hardest to turn on the charm, leaving Jimmy frustrated at the bad timing of his promise.
Charlie’s eagerness to impress Abi backfires when he mistakenly
picks a fight with Brae, not realising that he is her brother. The night ends
with Brae and Jimmy in a fight, witnessed by Dan, Mark and Susan. The next generation
of Marracks and Penwardens look set to be arch enemies just like their parents.
Mark tells Dan to leave but this only makes Dan more determined to stand his
ground. With all eyes on the Marracks, Dan decides to stay in Polnarren.
Episode 2

Mark makes it clear to Susan that he will do whatever it takes to get Dan out
of their life, even if it means telling him a deeper secret Dan doesn’t
know about. This terrifies Susan. While the Marracks try to settle in and Jimmy
and Brae shake hands, Mark’s threats are realised when Dan finds graffiti
on the surf café. When Dan finds that his van has also been vandalised
with newspaper cuttings of the boat accident he was accused of years ago, the
pressure from Mark is made crystal clear. Dan is finally forced to explain his
past with the Penwardens, Abi and Brae are angry with him for not standing up
for himself. Susan explains to her daughter, Grace, that Mark is still the love
of her life even though she was once with Dan.
Jackie Hughes and Ian Brenton are also newcomers to Polnarren. They left the city behind in order to make a better life for themselves but their dream is becoming hard to realise. Fin Morgan, Charlie’s Grandfather, is the owner of the caravan park where Ian and Jackie work. Fin is worried about the future of the site and is finding it hard to make ends meet. Ian knows more than Jackie but is determined not to burst her bubble until he has come up with a solution to their financial problems. While Ian struggles to sort things out for the caravan park, Jackie has been offered a job at the Marrack’s surf café.
Abi’s feelings for Jimmy grow. Jimmy also wants to be with Abi but has two dilemmas: not only should he keep his pact with Charlie but his father also wants him to stay away from the Marracks. If he were to put a step wrong, his trouble-loving sister Grace would tell tales. Grace is a daddy’s girl and therefore takes Mark’s anti-Marrack stance. She also has her eye on Ian, much to his discomfort.
Narinder, who knows what it’s like to be a newcomer in Polnarren, lives with Ivy Trehearne, landlady of The Wrecker’s Arms. Abi and her become instant friends and Narinder tells her she has run away from her family, who wanted her to have an arranged marriage.
Grace persists in her flirtation with Ian, who is trying to convince
Mark to help Fin out of a financial crisis by investing in the caravan park.
Mark laughs off Ian’s business proposition despite being interested in
buying the land for re-development. Susan desperately begs Dan to not take on
Mark, leaving him to wonder what secret she is hiding.
Episode 3
Diffusion : 18 January 2008 - ITV1 - 21:30
Susan fears what Mark will do in his continued determination to see the back
of Dan. Paying local youths to set fire to his van, Mark revels in reminding
the Marracks that they are still unwelcome in Polnarren. A furious Dan confronts
Mark with the truth about the boat accident – that he always suspected
he had taken the blame for Mark’s mistake - but is told to stay away from
buried secrets in case he discovers something he’d prefer had been kept
in the past.
Susan finds a friend in new resident Angela Cole. She confides her worries to Angela in The Wrecker’s Arms, but their brief heart to heart ends abruptly when both Mark and Dan enter the pub. Mark forces Susan to tell Dan that she never loved him, which leaves Dan confused and hurt.
Jimmy, forced to stick to his pact with Charlie, purposefully makes a bad impression with Abi. Seizing this as an opportunity to be a shoulder to cry on and emboldened by Jimmy’s words of wisdom, Charlie goes to comfort her. In an attempt to get back at Jimmy, Abi asks a delighted Charlie to the surf shop opening, much to Narinder’s sadness and Jimmy’s disguised envy.
Ian confesses to Fin that he approached Mark about the caravan park. Fin continues to struggle with the park but manages to resist Mark’s offer to buy him out. Meanwhile, Jackie accepts the job at the surf café, which emasculates Ian but pleases Brae as he clearly fancies her.
Despite feeling hurt by Susan’s denial of ever loving him,
Dan decides to celebrate his new venture with his family while a lonely Mark
contemplates his marriage and a sobbing Susan scrabbles at a spot in the sand,
seemingly desperate to find something once buried there.
Episode 4
Diffusion : 25 January 2008 - ITV1 - 21:30
The Marracks prepare for the opening party of the surf shop café, determined
to give their family venture a celebratory beginning. Mark and Susan decide
whether to go while Grace has already dressed up for the occasion and is upset
when Ian rejects her advances.
Concerns about the future of the caravan park hang over Ian when Fin says he’s considering Mark’s offer. The news that Jackie has taken the job at the surf shop café further upsets Ian. A romantic dinner together appeases his concerns.
An embittered Grace makes it clear to Charlie that Abi doesn’t care for him as Jimmy is the one she wants, so Charlie magnanimously tells his best mate that he should go after Abi.
With all eyes on Mark and Susan when they arrive at the party, Dan makes the best of the situation and toasts new beginnings. The party is in full swing when disaster strikes at the caravan park. Distraught at seeing Ian kissing Jackie through their caravan window, Grace had dropped a lit cigarette onto spilt lighter fluid. Brae runs into the flames and manages to rescue both Ian and Jackie from the burning caravan.
